南非鐵礦石出口有小機(jī)會(huì)

    Little room still exists for iron ore exports in South Africa

    Despite an effective 21-day nationwide coronavirus lockdown, South Africa is seeking some options to support local business. As a result, local miners received at least ephemeral opportunity to load iron ore from stockpiles.
    A joint venture of African Rainbow Minerals, Assmang, has received authorisation from the minister of Mineral Resources and Energy to operate its load-out stations at Khumani and Beeshoek mines in order to continue loading iron ore from stockpiles despite lockdown, according to the official statement. The exemption has been granted for goods which are considered critical to the nation’s economy and its revitalisation after the COVID-19 pandemic, metal Expert learnt. “Transnet has mobilised the requisite resources and reactivated the rail and port export system from the Northern Cape to the port of Saldanha […] at approximately 40% of normalized iron ore volumes for the week commencing March 30, 2020,” the company states.
    In addition, the South African Maritime Safety Authority allowed cargoes handling at ports for private companies, according to the order published on March 31. The enterprises are allowed to ask the ministry in charge for partial operation resumption individually.
    Despite some room for manoeuvre, the market players are rather pessimistic about chances to use it, metal Expert understands. “Even if the supplier receives needed permissions, the unions will be against operation and shipping, being concerned for their workers,” an insider said. Moreover, there are too many businesses interested in the window of opportunity, while narrowed logistics chain is overloaded.
